ASpectral Time-DomainMethod for Computational Electrodynamics

چکیده
Ever since its introduction by Kane Yee over forty years ago, the finitedifference time-domain (FDTD) method has been a widely-used technique for solving the time-dependent Maxwell’s equations that has also inspired many other methods. This paper presents an alternative approach to these equations in the case of spatially-varying electric permittivity and/or magnetic permeability, based on Krylov subspace spectral (KSS) methods. These methods have previously been applied to the variable-coefficient heat equation andwave equation, and have demonstrated high-order accuracy, as well as stability characteristic of implicit timestepping schemes, even though KSS methods are explicit. KSS methods for scalar equations compute each Fourier coefficient of the solution using techniques developed byGolub andMeurant for approximating elements of functions ofmatrices by Gaussian quadrature in the spectral, rather than physical, domain. We show how they can be generalized to coupled systems of equations, such as Maxwell’s equations, by choosing appropriate basis functions that, while induced by this coupling, still allow efficient and robust computation of the Fourier coefficients of each spatial component of the electric and magnetic fields. We also discuss the application of block KSS methods to problems involving non-self-adjoint spatial differential operators, which requires a generalization of the block Lanczos algorithm of Golub and Underwood to unsymmetric matrices. Stability of higher derivative modifications of Einstein - aether theory
A time-like unit vector field is used to generalize Einstein's gravity. The resulting theory, called the Einstein-aether theory, consists of a minimal coupling between an aether field and gravity. Inspired by the Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics, which is well-known for removing the singularity at the point charge, we generalized the Einstein-aether theory by adding such a higher order self-intera...
متن کاملLanczos Pseudospectral Propagation Method for Initial-Value Problems in Electrodynamics of Passive Media
Maxwell’s equations for electrodynamics of dispersive and absorptive (passive) media are written in the form of the Schrödinger equation with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The Lanczos time-propagation scheme is modified to include non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and used, in combination with the Fourier pseudospectral method, to solve the initial-value problem. The time-domain algorithm developed is ...

متن کاملCommunication: dynamical embedding: correct quantum response from coupling TDDFT for a small cluster with classical near-field electrodynamics for an extended region.
We show how to obtain the correct electronic response of a large system by embedding; a small region is propagated by TDDFT (time-dependent density functional theory) simultaneously with a classical electrodynamics evolution using the Near-Field method over a larger external region. The propagations are coupled through a combined time-dependent density yielding a common Coulomb potential. We sh...
متن کاملAn electrodynamics-Langevin dynamics (ED-LD) approach to simulate metal nanoparticle interactions and motion.
Understanding the formation of electrodynamically interacting assemblies of metal nanoparticles requires accurate computational methods for determining the forces and propagating trajectories. However, since computation of electromagnetic forces occurs on attosecond to femtosecond timescales, simulating the motion of colloidal nanoparticles on milliseconds to seconds timescales is a challenging...
